Nga mihi nui ki a koutou katoa
 大家好!
 Warm Greetings to you all

Here at Oropi our children learn two or three second languages, Māori, Mandarin and Spanish.   Our language program is a culmination of leading pedagogy and homegrown contexts. It is a dynamic program that will continue to evolve and develop with our learners' needs.

The learner’s ability to communicate is at the centre of our program with two supporting strands of developing linguistic and cultural awareness to achieve communicative competence.

Culturally our children experience a wide range of Maori and Mandarin customs, protocols, arts, traditions, festivities and perspectives. This is a rich tapestry of life experiences for any child to be leaving primary school with.

Language bytes are happening all over the school using a task-based approach. Students across teams enjoy Te Reo by engaging in waiata, dance, tikanga and storytelling. Mandarin language bytes are taught to all classes and students have the opportunity to experience Chinese culture and language. Spanish has just been introduced also to bring Oropi students closer to North Asia and the Pacific. Students interact through a variety of communicative tasks and a range of contexts designed to increase their language output. Teachers and students use the language learnt in lessons as part of their day at school. Phrases are shared with the community through the school newsletter so students can share their language learning with their whanau.
